In 1798 Callie Trent travels with her parents in a wagon train to the frontier of Tennessee. Before they reach the settlement where they will live, her father tells her he has arranged a marriage with her and Jacob McGinnis, a man she has never met.
Callie objects to the marriage, but when she meets Jacob, he is not that bad.but she has come to the mountains to teach the children in the settlement, not to get married. Before they reach the settlement, they are attacked by three of the meanest men from the ridge, three Melungeons.
Callie learns about the Melungeons and becomes interested in their history. No one knows when they came to the ridge. They are strange in physical appearance and in their ways. There is much prejudice against them. She befriends one family and teaches them to read and write.
Jacob falls in love with Callie and wants to marry her, but she does not encourage him. She wants to teach school before she marries, but the three Melungeon men have other plans for her.

Callie Mountain The Melungeon Series edition by Katt Anderson Literature Fiction eBooks

Katt Anderson has written about a period of history that doesn't get a lot of attention, and about a part of the country that doesn't get a lot of attention. When settlers came to Tennessee and Kentucky, they faced not only Indians and natural disaster, but the retaining of a way of life that they wanted to bring with them. Changes had to come. Racial tension abounded at that time with the Melungeon people, and Katt addresses this well.

When Callie arrives with her family in Tennessee, she discovers that her father has arranged a marriage for her with the son of a good friend. Hoping that a new life would mean more independence for her as far as her choice of mate, 17-year-old Callie tries every way she can to dislike the man to whom her father has promised her.

As the mother of a 17-year-old, I can certainly identify - girls are girls no matter what the time period! The historical facts were good, and I found myself staying up later than I planned, every night that I read the book! For those who liked the "Christy" books, it reminds me of those - characters driven by their circumstances, but finding out that they are stronger than even they thought they were.

I highly recommend this book, and can't wait until the next comes out.

Callie Mountain The Melungeon Series edition by Katt Anderson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I love the Great Smoky mountains.. This book takes you back to the time of settlement..the beauty snd the danger! Loved it......
I really enjoyed reading Callie's Mountain, I enjoyed reading about the Melungeon people, and how as christians we need to love one another no matter what we look like. Keep up the good work. Can't wait until the next book comes out.
Callie's Mountain is an inspiring tale of both young love as well as starting over after tragedy. The emotional, physical, and and family struggles are parallel to many of society's problems today. The characters are easy to identify with and make a connection. The innocence of Callie is inspiring and a model for young ladies everywhere. I can't wait for the second book....I couldn't put this one down and finished in one day. Great book with the message of goodness/purity weaven throughout.
I really enjoyed the book. I was expecting more about the Melungeons then was in the the book but found it was a good story. I have the second book also.
Well written, but a little too sweet for me
I loved this book from beginning to end. It took me to another place and time and made me think on the value of simple things. This book is a proof that there is no need of foul language to make a reading entertaining. At some times it seemed a bit slow paced, but this also helped to enjoy the description of life in that age. I award this book five rabbit paws.
I gave this book three stars but only to be fair because I was not interested in the characters from the beginning. Jacob is more concerned about looks than compatibility, as for example .thinking Call Sow must be fat or ugly if her father is arranging her marriage. Callow seems spoiled and frankly unlikable
