Sweet Secrets A Sweet Cove Mystery Book 3 edition by J A Whiting Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This is my first Sweet Cove cozy and it's the third book in the series. The author makes no allowance for not reading the first two books, so there are references galore at the start that will make no sense, and relationships between some of the characters are a mystery. Given that, it's a decent cozy albeit simplistic in plot. The writing seems geared to about a 4th grade reading level. There is no bad language, no sex, and just very minimal mild violence. There is no murder so that is rather refreshing. Best part is the recipes at the end of the book. I will definitely try out some of them. If you like mild cozies that are short and a quick read, not looking for anything involved, this is for you. You can read this one with your kids.
Another excellent book to read. Many characters to follow and feel like you are there with them. The suspense is there with the plot that is unproven and comes to perfect ending. Love her books and characters always. Can't wait for next one to come out!!!
This is the third in the series. (I still haven't read the first) I so enjoyed the second book in this cozy series that I just had to keep going and immediately bought this one for my and kept right on reading. They were fast reads and fit in for a hot Sunday afternoon/evening. Having no air conditioning here, I was looking for something light and easy to read to distract me from the heat and humidity. Both book 2 and this one fit that need quite nicely. As I wrote in my review of Book 2, this book was the perfect kind of cozy for me. Four sisters, who love each other and are discovering their "paranormal" gifts. (but not too heavy on the paranormal) Then there are two cats who help the sisters, budding romances, a New England shore town setting, mysteries to be explored. This book delves into more of why Professor Linden left the Victorian mansion to Angie and discoveries about the sisters' Nana and the land that may have actually been hers to own. There is a July 4th town celebration which really adds to the "cozy" aspect. The characters of each of the four sisters are well developed. They are different than each other but their love for each other is strong. I liked the fact that I could read both the second and third in the series in one day. (still have to get to the first)
As Tom is starting renovations in the Victorian Mansion so Angie can move her bake shop there. He discovers a locked box hidden in the walls, which when opened reveals a group of pictures that have been torn into pieces. The pictures are of the girls Nana and the professor who left Angie the house. This opens up the question of how they knew each other. Also if something happened to their Nana to cause her death 15 years earlier. As the sisters unravel the mystery they once again place themselves in danger, and are saved by the strange actions of the cats, as well as the newly displayed power from Ellie.
Meanwhile Mr. Finch proposes a plan to take Courtney on as an apprentice and business partner to rename and reopen his deceased brothers candy shop.
This is the first paranormal series I have ever read. I find I am enjoying it very much. Ms. Whiting does a very good job of weaving humor and suspense together with just a touch of danger to make her characters situations very believable.
I have not read books 1 and 2 yet this book still had way too much repetition to inform me of prior events. The storyline was decent enough just not developed in a way that entertained the adult mind.
I bought the audio but could not listen to it. The reader did only just read the words on the page. She did nothing to bring excitement to the words, no real emotion. I know it is not easy to be an audiobook narrator, you must have many different voices to become each character in the book but you must also have emotion to bring the story to life - both for the characters and the story, which is a character of itself. It felt more like the reader was handed the script just a short time prior to recording and therefore had little time to get the feel of the story and could only just read it. I was grateful she did not monotone it as another audio book had done, but that's another review.
Reading the book, it read like I should be of a very young mind, and maybe 12 to 16 is the intended audience. I did not see an age this book was intended for.
The storyline was ok and there are some lovely recipes at the end of the book.
A very enjoyable light mystery, with (for once) a psychic twist that did not involve totally over-the-top and unbelievable "powers". Rather than being able to bend time, clearly see the future or past--whatever--these sisters each have a realistic ability sudden flashes of insight, the occasional sighting of a relative who has passed over, uneasy feelings that warn them of danger. Their abilities assist in rather than making it possible for them to solve the mystery. The book is well-written and well edited (although, even when it is merely characters speaking, I do so wish that the correct form of comparison, like or as, was used!). The characters are likeable and the story flows well, and the mystery is just complex enough to be solved bit by bit. Although I was coming into the series partway, enough explanatory material was added to make plot details comprehensible. All in all, a very good read.
Unlimited or got it on free day. A little too much information, as in could have been tighter writing overall, too many extra unneeded words. There were also a couple of places that made me go Huh? because didn't make sense/fit in with other things already told facts. This is pretty much for all books/series.
